Mend A Friend Pet: Hard Luck Molly

MollyWe know nothing of Molly's life before she came to us, but it couldn't have been a happy one. She arrived as a three-year-old stray and, despite attempts to locate her owner, no one stepped forward to claim her. From the beginning, she stole our hearts, and we failed to understand why her family had abandoned her to the streets. Perhaps the answer lies in Molly's heart condition. Though an otherwise healthy, bouncy dog, she has a Grade-3 heart murmur. Perhaps her family felt that her medical condition would begin to cost them money. Perhaps they simply tossed her away. Who knows? Only Molly, and she's not talking.

Being the beautiful, friendly girl she is, Molly quickly found a new home, but returned to us a month later because she suffered separation anxiety when her new owner was at work. Who could blame her? She had already experienced abandonment. Shortly thereafter, she was again adopted and, as the years passed, it looked as if she had found her "forever home."

But it was not to be. After almost five years, one family member suddenly developed allergies, and Molly came back to us again. Three months later she left for the third time, and what we hoped, was the charm. She moved to the Bronx with a large family-kids to play with, a family to love, and to love her.

Then fate intervened.once more, less than a month later. Inattention, an open door, and a congested city street resulted in tragedy. A car fractured Molly's hind leg in two places. Animal Control responded, picked up her ravaged body, and transported her to their facility. The microchip we had implanted at the SPCA led the CACC back to us. We called her new owners. They hadn't even realized she was missing. When they learned what had happened to her.and what it could cost to fix her injuries.they pleaded poverty and surrendered her back to us.

We understand. Truly We do. People have different priorities, and often, unfortunately, pets fall somewhere below new cars or bigger houses. Okay. Maybe we don't understand. Pets give us unconditional love and ask little in return. How then can we abandon them when they need us the most?

Molly underwent surgery at the Animal Medical Center. The cost topped $3,000. She is now with us again, in a foster home, and needs that forever home she so deserves. If you would like to contribute to Molly's medical expenses through "Mend a Friend," or have room in your heart and home for a forever-friend, please contact us. We want Molly's next home to be her last with a family who loves her as much as we do.

Update: Molly has been adopted! Her new Mom had this to say: "Molly it turns out is the perfect dog. She is good with little children, big children, dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, loves to play, go in the car and rarely, if ever howls anymore. A perfect size, does not shed, and always happy. What more could anyone ask for. The sadness I feel is that we are her 5th home. Why has such a perfect girl had so many homes? So hard to understand. Everyones loss has been our gain. We are blessed to have her in our family. Thank you to all who loved and cared for her over the years and know that she is finally home."
