Behavior & Enrichment Coordinator:

Job Description

Summary: The Behavior & Enrichment Coordinator provides oversight of animal behavior and training programs as well as animal health and enrichment.


Job Classification:

Full-time, salaried with health benefits


Direct Supervisor: Executive Director


Organization Description: The SPCA of Westchester, located in Briarcliff Manor, NY just 35 miles North of New York City, offers the comprehensive services of: a shelter with capacity for 100 dogs and 100 cats; Simpson Spay and Neuter Clinic offering low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services to the general public; Humane Law Enforcement throughout Westchester County as well as Pet Therapy and Humane Education programs.

    Duties:
  • Evaluate dogs for suitability of adoption through behavioral assessments. Establish training and rehabilitation protocols to address adoptability and behavioral issues.
  • Train and monitor staff to work with and walk dogs, proper use of equipment and maintain safety protocols.
  • Interface and work with Volunteer Coordinator regarding existing programs for dog walking, socializing and train to adopt so as to maximize volunteers as a resource and to provide training and management of such programs as needed.
  • Oversee animal enrichment program.
  • Schedule and oversee dog walking/exercise/playgroups (in accordance with behavioral programs), and other needs of animals: bathing, grooming, etc.
  • Recognize and act on physical/medical problems in the shelter’s animals and bring notice to the veterinarian in a timely manner.
  • Process incoming animals. Transport and restrain animals for veterinary care when requested to do so.
  • Keep animal information on all kennels current and accurate.
  • Greet/accompany clients/visitors, offer assistance, information, advice on selections.
  • Act as liaison/point person for finding and researching rescue groups and sanctuaries, coordinating the placement of shelter animals with these groups, and developing/maintaining relationships with these groups as needed.
  • Oversee post-adoption follow-up calls on adopted animals.
  • Report/order/arrange for pick-up of supplies.
  • Coordinate transport of dogs from out of state.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director
    Qualifications:
  • Strong working knowledge of the principles and techniques of shelter best practices. Understanding the challenges and realities of maintaining an effective shelter in a climate of pet overpopulation.
  • Exceptional animal training and behavior modification abilities and experience
  • Ability to work courteously and effectively with other staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Ability to ‘roll up sleeves and be hands-on’ as needed
  • Must exemplify fondness of and empathy for animals
  • Familiarity with SAFER dog assessments and overall training protocols
  • Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy in work. Strong knowledge of the husbandry and behavior of companion animals.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to inspire staff and volunteers. Team-builder.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to make decisions and work under pressure and deadlines.
  • Commitment to safety, professionalism, and modern shelter practices.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holidays when needed. Tuesday – Saturday work week would be ideal.

  • Background:

    Minimum 3 years as a professional animal trainer

    Professional shelter experience preferred


    Education:

    College degree preferred.

    CCPDT Certified
